The Nagina Women's
Institute for Health and Education is a tax-exempt non-profit public
foundation established in response to the destitute conditions of women in
the Suriyawan area of Northern India. Suriyawan is a small district of between
5,000 to 10,000 people and about a 5 mile radius. It is located in a region
halfway between the cities of Delhi and Calcutta, which is an expansive area of limited resouces.
The area's population is estimated to be more than
50 million, and it is considered the most densely populated and poorest area of
India. It has a rural- primarily agricultural- economy, narrow dirt roads,
and a dearth of educational and medical facilities.
Our Clientele:
The impoverished condition of
women in Suriyawan is the result of the
lack of education and medical attention. As children, women are undernourished, denied education and
are less likely to receive medical care. Often girls are denied hospitialization.
Many teenage girls are forced
into marriage and are sometimes bought and sold like animals for
prostitution and slave labor. As wives and mothers, they are often treated
little better than farmhands and baby-making machines. Childbirth takes place at home in an
unsafe and inadequate environment with no qualified medical personel or medicines available.
Frequently this situation leads to lifelong complications for mother and child.
Consequently, the mortality rate for women and their infants is very high.
Women who survive childbirth are invariably "sick" all the time, as are their infants.
Should they outlive
their husbands, women are frequently denied inheritance, banished from
their homes and forced to live as beggars on the streets. They increase
the ranks of the homeless poor.
Our Vision:
Education for women and girls will result
in improved health, better wages, less need for government assistance
programs, and greater influence in family decision making. Education for
women would also favorably impact population growth, literacy, employment,
health, nutrition, food production, economic growth, and other social and
cultural issues. A pilot program is being established to serve the needs of
women. When complete, the development will provide an educational system
including a continuum from the elementary through the college level. A
clinic will be established which will be expanded to a full service
hospital facility. Plans and estimates are being evaluated and construction
will be starting soon.
The project also contemplates a
program to gather reliable data on the clientele, comparable to that
available in relatively modern societies. Prevalent medical issues for the
area will be explored. The concept of health, sanitation, nutrition, and
family planning will be introduced to the local population. Eventually,
health conditions will be improved and human suffering will be improved,
if not eliminated.
