| This proposal provides a glimpse of the general existing condition
of women in India, the lack of accessible education and medical facilities,
and the change that the Nagina Institute can bring. Upon completion, this
project would be the model for India and subsequently for projects around
the world.

Eight or more years of education for women encourages marriages at an
older age and broadens women's outlook. This results in lower birth
rates and a change in perspective, where women view themselves
as individuals and not just a family member. |
There is ample evidence that connects increased economic knowledge
with economic opportuinty. Both empower women. |
The government of India has acknowledged in a recent report by
its department of women and children that, in a culture that
canonizes sons and dreads the birth of daughters, to be born
female comes perilously close to being born less than human.
While women in the US and Europe today measure discrimination by
pay scales and seats in the corporate boardroom, women in the
third world measure mortality rates, lack of opportunity and
poverty levels. |
Poverty is directly related to the inequality of women. For development
to succeed, attitudes towards women must change.
|
Evidence shows that educated women have fewer and healthier children.
|
Education is probably the largest single contributor to enhancing the
status of women and thereby promoting development. Higher status for
women also has benefits in terms of improved health, better wages and
higher GNP, less government programs, and greater influence in family
decision making.
|
The cycle of illiteracy, disease, malnutrition, neglect and the population
explosion could be broken only if we take a keen interest in helping change
the course of daily living for millions of women around the world.
|
As a start in the goal of empowering women, a pilot program will be
established in a remote village in India. Suriyawan, the initial site
of this project has a population of between 5,000 to 10,000.
